ما هو الكلام؟

What is "Speech" (Kalām)?

التعريف

The Definition
الكَلامُ: لَفْظٌ مُرَكَّبٌ مُفِيدٌ بِالوَضْعِ
Speech: an oral utterance, compound, comprehendible, established in the Arabic language.

للكلام في اصطلاح النحاة أربعة شروط لا بد منها كلها:

١
لفظ
صوت خارج من الفم مشتمل على بعض الحروف الهجائية. الخط والإشارة والتفكير الداخلي ليست كلاماً عند النحاة.
An oral utterance made of Arabic letters. Writing, gestures, and inner thoughts are NOT speech in the grammatical sense.
٢
مُرَكَّب
مؤلَّف من كلمتين أو أكثر. الكلمة المفردة — مهما كانت — ليست كلاماً عند النحوي.
Composed of two or more words. A single word alone is never "speech" (kalām) grammatically, no matter how meaningful.
٣
مُفِيد
يُحسِّن السكوتُ على المتكلم بعده — أي يكتفي السامع بما سمع ولا ينتظر شيئاً آخر.
The listener is satisfied after hearing it — they don't wait for more. "When the teacher arrives" is NOT mufīd because the listener still waits: "what happens then?"
٤
بالوضع
أن تكون الألفاظ من وضع العرب — أي من اللغة العربية. الكلام بالفارسية أو التركية أو الفرنسية ليس كلاماً عند علماء العربية.
The words must belong to the Arabic language. Speech in Persian, Turkish, or French is not kalām according to Arabic grammarians.
📖 أمثلة الكلام المستوفي الشروط
العلمُ نورٌ ✓ — لفظ، مركب (كلمتان)، مفيد، عربي
Knowledge is light — all four conditions met ✓
محمدٌ رسولُ الله ✓
Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah ✓
محمدٌ فقط ✗ — مفرد، ليس كلاماً
"Muhammad" alone ✗ — singular word, not kalām
إذا جاء الأستاذُ ✗ — غير مفيد، السامع ينتظر
"When the teacher arrives…" ✗ — not mufīd, listener is left waiting
⚠️
فرق مهم: الكلامُ (بتعريف النحاة) ≠ الكلام (بتعريف اللغويين). اللغوي يعدُّ الإشارةَ والخطَّ كلاماً لأنها تُفيد. النحوي لا يعتدُّ إلا بالصوت الملفوظ.
Key distinction: Grammatical speech ≠ linguistic speech. Linguists include gestures and writing as "speech" since they convey meaning. Grammarians only count spoken utterances.

الاسم
Noun (Ism)
📘
الفعل
Verb (Fi'l)
📙
الحرف
Particle (Ḥarf)

الاسم

The Noun — Ism
كلمةٌ دلَّتْ على معنىً في نفسها ولم تقترن بزمان
A word that indicates a meaning in itself and is not tied to a tense (past/present/future).

يُعرَف الاسم بعلامات أربع:

١
الخفض / الجر
قبول حروف الجر: مِن، إلى، عن، على، في، الباء، اللام… إذا قبلت الكلمة حرفَ جرٍ فهي اسم.
Acceptance of jarr particles (min, ilā, 'an…). If a word can follow a jarr particle, it is a noun.
٢
التنوين
النون الساكنة في آخر الكلمة لفظاً لا خطاً — كـ(زيدٌ، كتابٌ، رجلٍ).
The nunation (tanwīn) — a silent nūn at the end of the word in speech, not in writing: زيدٌ, كتابٌ.
٣
دخول (أل)
قبول أداة التعريف: الرجلُ، الكتابُ، المسجدُ.
Accepting the definite article: al-rajul, al-kitāb, al-masjid.
٤
حروف الجر
المجرور بأحد حروف الجر دليلٌ قاطع على كونه اسماً.
Being governed by a jarr particle is definitive proof of being a noun.
📖 أمثلة على الاسم
محمدٌ — رجلٌ — كتابٌ — مسجدٌ — سماءٌ — أرضٌ — هندٌ
﴿بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ﴾ — اللهِ: مجرور بالباء → اسم
اللهِ governed by بـ → noun ✓

الفعل

The Verb — Fi'l
كلمةٌ دلَّتْ على معنىً في نفسها واقترنَتْ بأحد الأزمنة الثلاثة
A word that indicates a meaning in itself and is tied to one of three tenses.
١
الماضي
ما دلَّ على حدثٍ وقع قبل زمان التكلم — مثل: كتَبَ، ذهَبَ، قرأَ.
Past tense: an action that occurred before the moment of speech. Examples: kataba, dhahaba, qara'a.
٢
المضارع
ما دلَّ على حدثٍ يقع في زمان التكلم أو بعده — يبدأ بأحد حروف (أنيت): أَ، نَ، يَ، تَ.
Present/future: action occurring now or in future. Begins with one of the letters أنيت (alif, nūn, yā', tā').
٣
الأمر
ما دلَّ على طلب حدثٍ بعد زمان التكلم — مثل: اكتُبْ، اذهَبْ، اقرأْ.
Command: requesting an action after the moment of speech. Examples: uktub, idhhab, iqra'.
📖 أمثلة على الأفعال الثلاثة
كتَبَ (ماضي) — يَكتُبُ (مضارع) — اكتُبْ (أمر)
Past / Present / Command from the root ك-ت-ب (writing)
﴿اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ﴾ — اقرأْ: فعل أمر
iqra': verb of command ✓

الحرف

The Particle — Ḥarf
كلمةٌ دلَّتْ على معنىً في غيرها — ولا تقبل علامات الاسم ولا علامات الفعل
A word that indicates a meaning only in relation to others — and accepts neither noun signs nor verb signs.
🔑
الحرف لا يدل على معناه وحده — لا يكتمل معناه إلا بالانضمام إلى اسم أو فعل. مثال: (مِن) وحدها لا تفيد، لكن (خرجتُ من البيت) مفيدة.
The particle has no meaning on its own — it only completes its meaning when joined with a noun or verb. "Min" alone means nothing; "I left from the house" is complete.
📖 أمثلة على الحروف
مِن — إلى — عن — على — في — الباء — اللام — الكاف
Jarr particles: from, to, about, upon, in, by, for, like
لم — لن — إنَّ — أنَّ — لكنَّ — كأنَّ — ليتَ — لعلَّ
Other particles: لم (jazm), لن (naṣb), إنَّ and sisters
﴿إِنَّ اللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ﴾ — إنَّ: حرف توكيد ونصب
inna: particle of emphasis and naṣb ✓

💡
قاعدة ابن الحاجب: الكلمةُ إما أن تدلَّ على معنىً في غيرها فهي حرف، أو تدلَّ على معنىً في نفسها: فإن اقترنت بزمان فهي فعل، وإلا فهي اسم.
Ibn al-Ḥājib's rule: a word either conveys meaning in something else → particle; or in itself: if tied to a tense → verb; otherwise → noun.
النوعType التعريفDefinition العلاماتSigns مثالExample
الاسم

الفعل
Verb / Fi'l

الحرف
Particle / Ḥarf

⚠️
تنبيه: لا يُجزم الاسم، ولا يُجر الفعل. الجزم خاص بالأفعال المضارعة. الجر خاص بالأسماء. وهذا من أدق الفروق.
Note: Nouns cannot be in jazm; verbs cannot be in jarr. Jazm is exclusive to present-tense verbs. Jarr is exclusive to nouns. This is one of the sharpest distinctions in Arabic grammar.
